Brand new Modern Reggae Artists with a Twist
He draws inspiration from Reggae greats such as Bob Marley and Sizzla, but Johannesburg – based Reggae artist; “Freeky” has a unique sound he hopes will change people’s perceptions about the genre.
Born in Sebokeng (South of Johannesburg), Freeky was first introduced to the genre at the age of 14 and although he was not aware what it was, he was attracted to the sound. One of the first Reggae songs he remembers hearing at that tender age was “Red Wine” by UB 40. His interest grew as he listened to Bob Marley, Jacob Miller and late Joseph Hill from the band, Culture.
Unlike mainstream Reggae artists, Freeky wants to change the perception that the genre is only enjoyed by a certain group of people. He is about teaching people about the genre and showing that it is not about a specific religion but something that aims to unite people. He believes in promoting love and unity.
The singer and songwriter launched his career as part of a band called Ntjapedi, playing bass. The highlights of which include sharing a stage with Salif Keita and Hugh Masekela. The band also collaborated with Jah Seed and Bongo Riot. He later formed a band called Tattoo L9 for which he wrote, composed and lead. And since launching his solo career in 2011, Freeky has had collaborations with Mawe2, Lutan Fyah, Singer Jah, Sizzla, Tommy Gunn, Stacious, Molly “Superman Omnyama”, Patexx and Tabeta Cshae.
His favourite Reggae artist at the moment is Damien Marley, who he says incorporates the genre with rap music, making him appeal to a bigger audience. His goal is to also perform in bigger stages for a wide audience.
