Rising up through the hardship of city life, Men Of The Past were manifested by the guidance of the Mighty One on the streets of Johannesburg, where all the members met. They discovered that their dream was one and hence that made them one. A group of poetic, magnetic, acoustic African sounds, in the 21st century. They feel they were born to fulfill that which they are meant to fulfill – a message of change.
Composed of 6 members, MenzI (lead singer) from Kwa-Zulu Natal, Seka Maleka (percussionist) from Limpopo, Vusumzi Madolla (percussionist & vocals) , Kojo aka Son of the soil original (percussionist) from Ghana, and Lion Silver Dread (bassist) from Senegal and Prince Shapiro from Eastern Cape poet and percussionist.
Men Of The Past have been enlightening their Southern African audiences for the past 5 years with a whirlwind of unplugged enchanted sessions. They are influenced by the music of the birds as well as the struggles of everyday life.
“ The melodies are composed from the internal rhythm which resonates from within the bowels of our ancient DNA” – MenzI
Their live performances are an audio-visual exhibition of art and music, they have a lot to address in regards to social ills. Their conscious and on point lyrics ignite the imagination and make one ask questions about the current system in place in the world and the future of the human race. The band use African instruments such as the Djembe and Calabash combined with acoustic and bass guitars.
“ The music becomes the remedy and songs rise up to the level of value, and occupy spaces” – MenzI
