Outenikwa-Stat House of Rastafari Africa Day Festival 2016 – George

Outenikwa-Stat’s flagship ‘Africa Day’ Festival will take place in Outeniqua nature reserve in Witfontein, George, 27- 29 May. Africa’s rich culture will be showcased through family-friendly activities, along with music, performances, sport and educational elements.

Africa Day, designated by the African Union as an annual celebration of the continent’s unity, falls on 25th May each year. Celebrations to mark the day occur across the globe; in some African states, it is a designated national holiday, while in diverse cities – such as New York, Dublin, Melbourne London and Washington – academic gatherings and cultural showcases mark the day.

Outenikwa-Stat House of Rastafari [OSHOR] has been the driving force behind Africa Day celebrations in George since 1999. Initially, it worked to fund and promote a small number of events centering around culture. In 2015, it expanded the profile of activities by hosting a significant Music festival and family event in George. The festival hosts acts of, singing, dance performances, theatrical performances, storytelling, and spoken word. In addition to this flagship event, OSHOR supported a programme of
community-based initiatives around the City.

Since 2015 the Malgas riverside in the Outeniqua nature reserve, George, has been home to the flagship event with over 1,000 people taking part in the festivities. This year the organisers are expecting over  2,000 people to attend and enjoy the festivities in the forest.

It is a day to recognise the continent’s achievements, and to reaffirm efforts to create a better life for all.

The intention of the organisers is to bring different cultures together in a non formal way promoting cultural exchange by providing a platform for local talent to showcase their art. To work hand in hand with local government and also create positive relations with the private sector as a local community based organization.

The organisers of the festival are working hard to develop the festival as a regional benchmark community oriented festival for now and years to come and are soliciting sponsorship from individuals, private and public sectors. Contact the Secretary-General of the organisation, Mr Hein Scheepers to get details about the modest sponsorship packages available, from Platinum Sponsorship to General sponsorship deals.
