It has been reported that the legendary Elder Carlos Djedje is in hospital in Pretoria. The news were broken by Mandlakaise Black Maseko on his Facebook page. He posted pictures of Elder Carlos in hospital relaxing under the tree looking rather healthy with the apt caption:

Join me to wish the Legendary reggae producer, composer, author and performer Carlos Djedje speedy recovery. Carlos is the father of reggae music in South Africa, the only living legend whose some of his music is still censored on radio. This African hero of our times worked with the greatest musicians such as the Marley family, Don Carlos, Trevor Hall and Peter Tosh during his hey days. Speeding recovery elder. The world envies the City of Tshwane to have you as their son of the soil. See you in the afternoon.

Heralded as the father of South African Reggae, he has been recording since the 70’s, paving the way for the likes of Lucky Dube and many other South African Reggae artists. In 1983 he performed alongside Reggae International Star Peter Tosh in Swaziland.

Elder Carlos had recently fulfilled his long dream of performing in Jamaica last year at the IRIE FM’s Marcus Garvey Celebration on August 21, together with his band the Protectors.

He is based in Pretoria and has been very much active and was very instrumental in organising the Reggae Explosion Concert series at the Pretoria State Theater, sharing the stage with upcoming and reggae artists.

We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him again the Reggae Revival Shows.
