Mzansi Reggae Sistas Vol III
Mzansi Reggae Sistas is a Compilation of female protagonists in Reggae in Southern Africa. It hopes to highlight and showcase the sistas’ contribution to the archive of modern Reggae and Dancehall music from this side of the equator. It is an eclectic mix of Soul Afro Reggae Sounds, from Roots daughters to Rude Girls; from Reggae Queens to Soulful Sistas.
The soulful opening track Rise Up Now from Cape Town’s very own Bad Gyal Swit Beey is a motivational track borne out of her personal painful experiences and encouraging others to generate pain into something positive, Rising above and beyond circumstances. She later returns with a tight club banger joint produced by DJ Fydale for Xfactor productions, ting call Pull It on the Focus Riddim. The tune also made it to the MzansiReggae’s Top 20 Dancehall Tunes for 2016.
Azania is an ode to Mama Land. A Smooth Afro Soulful track from Kamo and the FingerPrint5 taken from their EP Innocence which is a perfect blend of soul, folk, reggae and world music. It was produced by Simphiwe “Simzamatic” Kulla and released in July 2016.
Empress Authority outta Durban hits us with the sultry smokey Land and Sea taken from the hugely popular Thando Riddim produced by Roots and Kulcha Entertainment.
After she has taken us across the Land and Sea she delivers us to serenading voice of Empress Naphtali as she takes us on a Higher Ground to maintain a higher state of meditation. The track is taken from her debut EP From The Heart released 2015.
Bella Velapi, the first lady of Reggae Jazz blesses us with jazzy vibrations on a ting call I am in Love with a Rastaman immediately followed by the classy Leaders of Tomorrow which she performs regularly with Azania Band out in the hometown in the Eastern Cape.
Sista Phumi Maduna, toured with Lucky Dube as a backing vocalist has gone solo working often with One People Band and Thutukani Cele, ex-members of the Lucky Dube Band. The track, Spread Some Love is taken from her award Nominated album The Sun will Rise.
On the Ghana Bed Riddim comes the voice of Qhawe [warrior] with a ting call Burn Wicked. The same riddim that Bella Velapi is on with the track I am in love with a Rasta Man. Sister Qhawe hails from the Eastern Cape and now based in Canada with strong links to the mother land.
Jazz P injects the compilation with the infectious hip hop’ish chant as she laments about the frustrations of Money. The track opens with the line: Babylon Shitstem / Rat racing every day / Gotta Get that Money Money Money. The track is taken from her EP Jah Work shaans which came out in 2016. Jazz P is a Swaziland native, a lyricists and vocalist majoring in Rhythm and Poetry [RAP] currently based in Mozambique. She is not a Bad Gyal. She Bad.
From the Republic of Cape Town emerges forth Omega Light. with a ting call FLY. Sista Omega is a Roots Dawta who is currently working on her debut album. Asian Black., a Zim native based in Cape Town drops a ting call Straight From My Heart while Miss Independent follows with a jovial Miss You. Ghetto Queen adds to the cannon of Cape Town’s vocalists with a ting call I Believe a lead track and title of her debut Album. All of the above Cape Townians, with the exception of Omega Light feature on all three volumes of Mzansi Reggae Sistas.
Sistah Roots Tafari from the Eastern Cape comes Bare Footed. She comes bearing the message in churchical vibes.
New kids on the block Zama Sunshine and Palesa Flower represented well voicing on the My Number One Riddim produced by Spiting Fyah Ink in Gauteng. Zama Sunshine hits us with I hate to Say Goodbye while Palesa Flowers us with High Grade on My Number One Riddim.
Mizdee Lu the versatile Dancehall Queen fresh from her Washkalakunda collabo with Scooby Nero, Girl with attitude straight outta Johustleburg returns to Mzansi Reggae Sistas with Jah is on My Side ; having featured on both volume 1&2.
Empresspro released her new single ‘Grudge’ after a two year hiatus since her last offering.
Kenya’s International Rising Reggae Star Cara Feral blesses the compilation with Women of Steel which debuted at number 10 on iTunes Hot Tracks Reggae Charts of May 2017. Her sweet melodic voice with a feral vocal range is set to capture the hearts of many.
