PUNKSTER KC “The Crazy Punk”
Punkster KC has over a decade of Radio Presenting experience, and in addition to being a venue /club DJ specialising in Reggae and Ragga (dancehall music). Branded as one of South Africa’s best CD DJ’s, he started his radio career at “The Voice of Soweto 87.6” in 1997. There, he co-hosted a show called “The Crucial Chimes” with the likes of Sibusiso “The General” Nxumalo (SABC 1 ex-Executive Producer) , Andrew “The Admiral” Kasrils (Phat Joe Live’s Movie Critic and Yfm DJ) and lastly Dumisani “The Don Dada” Dlamini (Movie Producer). The show was a hit on the airwaves and people could not get enough of it.
Destiny called and most of his colleagues heeded its call and so they went in pursuit of bigger and better things, whilst he stayed on for two years hosting the same show. Late in 2000 he had the honour of being invited by the Admiral to YFM 99.2, to assist in co –presenting a show called “Raggatak” (it aired every Thursday’s mornings 1am to 3am). To his surprise he made an impression with the listeners because they were inundated with positive feedback in the form of e-mails. The on –air chemistry that existed between the Admiral and himself was a result of years of working together in the club (Tandoor and Horror café) and so the listeners picked up on it.
Another bonus was their different musical tastes (Andy loves ragga and he on the other hand love roots reggae) and the fact that they mixed live on air like maniacs kept the listeners on the edge of their seats.
At Yfm he was a stand-in for the show and a mix DJ and that lasted for three years. 2003 he had an opportunity to work for an Internet Radio Station called Trans-Africa Radio and there he produced and presented a show called “Africa Unite”.
The shows musical content was only reggae and ragga of which he was mainly responsible for, the club style live mixing was appealing to the syndicated audiences all around Africa and the show soon topped at the number one spot because of ratings. Initially he was
brought to the station to sit-in for a “bedren selekta” /DJ who was away in London for business, he was supposed to do at least two to three shows maximum but after his first show, the management of the station was so impressed and offered him a contract.
He stayed with the station for at least three years. I like the fact that I was given “Carte Blanche” by the station in terms of the musical content and guests that I could invite and I rose to the challenge. Those were the happiest times in my musical career, to do what you loved and be paid for it.
2012 late November a bredren radio host and friend, Bongani “Bongolusion” Hadebe heard some of the crazy mixes he was doing live on air and suggested that he come and do the similar thing on his show, instead of playing mix-tapes from Jamaica. The radio station was called Radio 2000 and currently known as 2000 Fm, that gave him national exposure because this was a national SABC radio station and the feedback they receive was that their audience were loving the new feature and couldn’t wait for the next riddim he was going to dissect on air. He continued mixing for the show, until its demise around April 2013.
He had another opportunity of working for yet another underground internet radio station, Blaq Fly Radio and there I had to dig deep down from my the depths of my soul in order to deliver the scorching mixes the people wanted. I often sit and listen to these mixes and I can’t believe it’s me and it’s South African. He had the pleasure of producing and hosting a show called “Reggae Vibes” on Soweto TV, which he started because he felt that people needed to see their favourite artists on television. Furthermore the amount of famous Jamaican artists he had the pleasure of interviewing includes the like of Jah Mason, Bennie man, Lutan Fyah, to name but a few. The show is still on air and he has since handed it over to Advocate Sipho Mantula ”The Rebel” to host it because he was busy with other interests. The show airs on channel 251 every Thursdays at 20h00.
Now, as he awaits the next chapter in his musical career and what the future holds for him, he sincerely hopes that it’s big because fans of the musical movement are also waiting with baited breath for his return to the airwaves. “The Scourge of the airwaves rides again”
Currently he hosts a 3 hour reggae show at WESTSIDE FM
