Mthatha Kwanzaa Inaugural soundclash
Massive sound System in collaboration with Mthatha Rastafarian Community and Nguvu Jiwe are bringing a Reggae Soundclash to the 2022 edition of Mthatha Kwanzaa to be held at Mthatha Art Centre on December 27, 2022.
The Pan African celebration of harvest of the first fruits has been happening annually since 2006. It started at Madeira street and has since adopted the Mthatha Community Arts Centre as its home through the years. It is a family-friendly event organised by the local Rastafari community of Mthatha and attended by people of the town as well as surrounding rural towns like Mqanduli and Port St Johns.
Ras Lakhe Mteyi, one of the organisers explained that: “Covid affected the Kwanzaa event negatively in the past two years, so it is proper that we go Big this year. We expect visitors from as far as KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town and many surrounding towns. We expect to have a joyful musical celebration and no malice.”
The two day event will kick off on December 26, 2022 with Poetry session, Speeches, Edutainment and Drumming circle and will be followed by music performances and the soundclash on 27 December. One of the most prolific guest speaker this year is Ras Jabulani aka Trevor Hall who is marking three decades since he repatriated from Jamaica to South Africa. As an elder and performing artist he will be sharing all this with Mthatha people. The artists line up boasts Eastern Cape’s finest including Lord Harmony, Itesman, Raider Boss, Black Roots, Queen Bhingi, Roots Dread, Jah Army Crew, High Sky Band and Do Good Family and more.
The Soundclash
The musical contest will have two Reggae DJs showcasing their dubplates (customized songs) along with speech and arguments to outsmart each other. The crowd will be the judge, and the DJ getting more forwards will be the winner of the first Mthatha Kwaanza Reggae Soundclash.

DJ Vinn for Lion King Muzik
Johannesburg based raggamaffin, DJ Vinn is a keen Reggae lover, Activist as well as promoter. He started his career as a Club/Soundclash DJ in 2005. He shared stages with reggae artists from Jamaica and South Africa in various events and Shows and he played in different radio stations in Johannesburg and online UK based radio stations.

Selekta Massive for Massive Soundsystem
After a decade of hosting reggae and other shows at Unitra Community Radio and Radio Grahamstown, contributing to Tru Fm, Vukani Fm and Ingwane Fm reggae shows, Khaya Tonjeni diversified his reggae music Activism to branch out as a sound system known as Massive sound System. This idea was born back in 2010.
“My first dubplate was recorded at Sattafrika Soundstation by Itesman with the voice of the first Sama Award winning reggae album, the 12 Star General, Black Dillinger aka Nkululeko Madolo in 2012 and ever since l have been collecting dubplates, and customized reggae songs, a very costly hobby and obsession. It is about time that l share these songs with my people in Mthatha through this soundclash ,” said Selekta Massive.
Selekta Massive continues to promote Southern African reggae music by releasing regular 1 hour long mixes online via social networks, host a exclusive reggae music blog, is a founder and leader of Massive sound System and work with the Recording Industry South Africa as a consultant especially on the Sama awards reggae category.
Selekta Massive is also a manager and promoter of reggae artists, he will be coming with two Eastern Cape reggae giants, Lord Harmony, Itesman and Hip hop veteran from Izithunywa Zohlanga, Pura Visa.
