Mahke Mvelo – In Our Time
The lone and beautiful voice of Mahke Mvelo (Mother Nature) from the land of the rising sun (Mpumalanga) has resurfaced with her Rhythm and Poetry (RaP) medz in her debut album titled In Our Time. The album consists of ten beautifully laid out tracks produced by her long time associate Young 2unn Beats. They have been consistent is mastering their sound which they describe as ‘a unique blend of Reggae and Mas’kandi’, except in this Album there are traces of neo soul and meditative frequencies also blended in A sign of growth and pushing boundaries. Mahke has remained true to her self, her voice and her delivery style without fear or favour.
Her EP, Give Thanks which came out in 2022 was a bold project, which got a luke warm reception and largely went ignored, but that does not diminish it brilliance. It is still a body of work that is worth a listen and belongs to collectors books. In that EP she boldly stepped out from the shadows by channelling her essence through song, making way for new creative energies which are evident in this Album.
The Album is like something out of a Film soundtrack, taking you to a time and place that you have never been yet sounds and feels familiar. Mahke’s rhymatic Swati flow lazingly glazing over Young 2unn Beats is soothing and vibrates on higher frequencies.
