Shwaniyah

It was the 11 April 1983, the time was 11:31 Ante Meridiem. Catherine Marshall gave birth to a very feeble baby girl and named her ‘Shuaniyah: The sick child weighted less than three pounds and many were sure that she was going to die.

Born ‘Shuaniyah’ Watson to dread (Rasta) parents, her birth certificate incorrectly states Celia Shwaniyah Marshall. Her parents are both warriors who survived the atrocities of some of the most inhumane laws still on of the Commonwealth of Dominica, (The Dread Act). Shwaniyah was born in a time when having dreadlocks meant that you should immediately be shot by police. At the hospital there was a fight, at the Birth Registry there was fighting too. Rastas were hated so much at that time, they didn’t even enter a name on her birth certificate until 12 years later (1995).

There was also fighting at home, and the children were living with their grandparents and not allowed to see their father. Fighting between police and Rastas was happening in the hospital on the same day that Shwaniyah was born.

Through all this turmoil energy, the sick baby survived and became strong. She never ended up in the burial pit that was dug for her at birth. Her life has never been easy since then.

In September 2023, Shwaniyah graduated with a law degree, LLB Law (Cum Laude) from the University of Wolverhampton in England. A few months later, she became an international qualified COMMERCIAL MEDIATOR with Phoenix Dispute Solutions. Today, she is a self-employed PDSL, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (ClArb), Civil Mediation Council (CMC) and International Mediation Institute (IMI) qualified commercial mediator.

She is also a singer and songwriter, wonderful mother, and loyal friend. The living goddess is also qualified as a professional tarot reader and releases tarot readings on YouTube (Aries Caribbean Tarot) iTunes and Spotify.

Now, Shwaniyah is actively pursuing a career as a Barrister and is enrolled on the Bar Practice Course at the University of Law in England. We wish her all the best.

She does music as a hobby, strictly for fun and for fun and promotional purposes. She releases music to make herself feel happy. Over the years, she has written THOUSANDS of songs on riddim versions and instrumentals from most of the best producers in reggae and dancehall.
