The Bob Marley Soccer Challenge is held annually in Pietermaritzburg during the month of February in remembrance of the legend Bob Marley. The first one was held in 2014 at Plessislaer TVET College. Football was Bob Marley’s favourite activity second only to music. Even when he went on tour he would carry a football to play against other musicians, players, journalists who wanted to interview him. When he was asked why he loved football so much, he said “Football is a whole skill to itself. A whole world. A whole universe to itself. I love it because you have to be skillful to play it! Freedom! Football is freedom.”
And that’s the reason why we remember him with a game of football and a reggae concert.
Teams will be competing for the Bob Marley Cup and a grand prize of R10000.
