Motsatsing Ntsamai
DJ Mofaya is a Johannesburg based singer, songwriter, dj and voice over artist. This infectious performer was born in Soweto in 1984 and raised in Spruitview, Ekurhuleni. Her first taste of music performance came when she was living in Pimville, Soweto, when she joined the band ‘Scrapyard’, lacing their kwaito/hip hop tracks with her soulful voice. But it was with her 5-year run as the lead vocalist in the alternative Indie band – Uju – that reigned during the times where HHP, MXO, Lebo Mashile, Kabomo and the likes where gaining recognition in the Joburg poetry and music scene. She thrived from the intoxicating high energy performances that were synonymous with UJU. Some of her defining moments in the band were when they featured on the same bills with some big acts like Patti Labelle in Swaziland, The Afro Cuban All Stars at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, percussionist Tlale Makhene, Thandiswa Mazwai, Judith Siphuma, The Parlotones, Prime Circle, The Mahotella Queens, Kabelo (Bougaluv) and a few others. In 2009 she left Uju, following the release of first signed album “Free” in which she helped to pen some of the songs. The songstress trained as a contemporary singer at the Shine Music School and In 2012 she went on hone her craft, at the Johannesburg Central College, where she studied Jazz, majoring in Guitar. Her journey took a turn and went more digital after studying dj’ing at Soul Candi in 2016, where she also followed her heart and pursued the worldwide genre of Reggae Music, which is taking the South African scene by storm. You can catch this vibrant performer mixing her DJ sets with her singing and is sometimes joined by a live saxophonist. Mofaya has a role on local Telenovela ‘iSithembiso Season 2’ and we’ve also seen her on movies My Zulu Wedding and She is King, where her single Too Irie (remix) was listed on the sound track. She has recently collaborated with Mahotela Queens pinanist, DJ Spelete on a house track ‘Rato Laka’, Producer ‘Eye on Feather’ and Jahzo from Rudeboy Entertainment. You can catch her every Friday at Eleven 45 Lounge in Randburg and every quarter at Trackside Creative for her ‘DJ Mofaya Hang Outs’ sessions. She is a sight for sore eyes and super talented.
