Flex and Sweat Winter Warm Up – @SocialNetwork
Flex and Sweat Winter Warm Up is an event aimed at promoting the Reggae Dancehall movement in Cape Town. Organised by SocialNetwork, a lifestyle creative platform that showcases and celebrates artistic diversity through various events around Cape Town, the Winter Warm UP event is also aimed at facilitating workshops that will cater for aspiring DJ’s. SocialNetwork was formed by a collective of Creatives who decided to host multi-faceted events that showcases music, fashion, Visual Arts and culinary delights. Reggae Dancehall forms a huge part of the founding members of the collective and it therefore came as no surprise that the concept of Flex and Sweat was endorsed through the 1st Winter Warm Up Dancehall Party.
They came up with the concept of Open Deck Session, similar to an Open Mic Session, where aspiring DJ’s can flex their skills. One of the members of the collective, Lady Slice laments the fact that there aren’t any new selectors in the scene and wondered if the absence could be attributed to lack training and a platform.
“There has been a Huge gap and silence in new fresh selectors in the Cape Town Dancehall Scene most specially in the hood. We aiming to create a platform where Deejays are able to share their skill, Experience and Insight through Practical workshops that will be Facilitated by some amazing Talented Individuals who have been contributing immensely towards the Global Music Scene.” – LadySlice – Event Organiser.
Before the Open Deck Session, there will be the DJ Workshop, which is the highlight and the focus for the day and it will be facilitated by Cape Town’s finest. The Workshops will take 3 hours and will incorporate both theory and practicals. Each Flex and Sweat Party will incorporate these Workshops as the collective has noticed that there is a lack of platforms for new upcoming deejays with an interest in Hip Hop and Dancehall/Reggae.
DJ Rozzano Davids [Real Rozzano – The best of eKapa] one of South Africa’s hip hop pioneers, the first generation of hip hoppers in South Africa, will also be on board as one of the workshop facilitators. He will be joined by resident DJ and operator Melak, Teba Shuma – The Real Social Worker and Siphe Tebeka.
After the workshops, they will get down to the real business of the art of Dancehall partying with DJ’s:
Kush Grove – Zim
Teba Shumba – Vinylz
Bashmouth Sounds – Zim/SA
Ms Ginja Ninja – Germany
DJ Grey and JJ – (KYD Soundsystem) SA
Flex and Sweat Winter Warm up will take place at Siseko Centre in Gugulethu, Cape Town on Saturday, June 29. The workshops will start at 18:00 to 21:00. From 21:30 to 23:30 is the Open Deck Session and the Dancehall Party continues till 6:00am. Refreshment will be sold at the venue and the organisers promises tight security and there is ample parking. More information on their events page here
