Heinrich ‘Yagga Flame’ Klassen hails from Kuilsriver, the birth place of renowned author Herman Charles Bosman and one of the toughest township in the Cape Flats, Cape Town. The hardships of living in the township informed his musical journey as he transformed from being and RnB crooner to a Reggae Dancehall artist with allegiances to the Rastafarian faith where he took the Nazareth vow. Music, reggae music in particular, became a force that would help him navigate the drudgery of township life and earned him the moniker ‘Voice of the People’ as he intends using his voice and his music to uplift the youth of ghettos in the Cape Flats.
The name Yagga was taken from the word Ragga, meaning the fusion of different types of genres and combining them with reggae in order to bring out a unique type of sound that compliment the style and trend in reggae and Dancehall. It was bestowed on him back in 2014 with his breakthrough single, a cover version of Chris Brown ‘Dont judge me‘. He cites Jah Cure as the main influence in his short career span, and it is something that is clearly present in his vocal style.
To date he has released over 20 singles which culminated in his debut album, Symptoms of Love, recorded at Flyweh Records in Cape Town. The album has 14 tracks with the single ‘Strongest‘ making the most impact in the dancehall scene. The track Addiction was recorded at Natty Natty Recording Studios, with the mixing and mastering done by another hard hitting producer from Cape Town, Seventon. He worked closely with long time associate and mentor, Jah Link, who owns the Flyweh Records label and featured on the song ‘What you need‘.
Yagga Flame attributes his success to hard work and having worked with different producers and artists and that helped to mold and develop his new style and way of delivering his message. He almost always get positive responses from his audiences, something that keeps him motivated with the desire to excel and wanting to do more.
He says he would one day love to work with the man who has inspired him the most in his music and helped to bring him closer to reggae, Jah Cure. He is looking forward to work and collaborate with other musicians from around South Africa and Africa, as he believes that it is something that can only make the industry stronger.
When he is not in the studio recording music, Yagga Flame spends his energies and time building the foundation for a Non Profitable Organisation called Stand Up EDU, that he started with fellow friend and musician, Fire Flames. The main aim of the organisation is to enlighten, develop and uplift the youths in an around the surrounding areas through the form of art.
He is currently working on promoting his debut album and will shortly be launching it with a live band where guests artists and friends would join in the evening of live reggae music with a twist. The sophomore album is already in the works.
I prefer live performances to studio work. I love to see the response from my audience so when I get back to the studio, I know what the audience want. I love performing live. Its a wonderful experience and it gives me the opportunity to put my work out on display, studio is where the magic happen and live is where I make da magic. Yagga Flame
