King MAS speaks on Human Zoos in 20th century America
A bone chilling chapter of African history has been exhumed and resurrected by the musical “Obeah Man”. With the upcoming release of his latest single “Ota Benga Smile” around the corner (available for download October 27th) there has been much speculation about the unsettling artwork the King has commissioned and the smiling figure depicted on the cover.
Who is this haunting specter from the not so distant past?
“Ota Benga Smile” examines the captivity of a humble man from the Mbuti region of the Kongo who, in the early 1900’s, was kidnapped from Africa and sold into captivity in the United States alongside other captives which included apes! Even in the post slavery era there was still a significant “Human Zoo” industry when non-Europeans were put on display, held captive, and mistreated for entertainment purposes. This horrific narrative is a testament to the cruelty experienced at the hands of the European colonial regime by many indigenous people of the world and the haunting rhythm track produced by Mitymaose only heightens the ominous tone of this true American horror story!
