We can change the world is the theme on which the international festival reggae Rototom Sunsplash will build its 27th edition in Benicàssim (Castellón, Spain), 16 to 22 August, 2020. A theme that will inspire the programming, the cultural engine and the social actions that the musical macroevent promotes every year and with which it has a clear message: each person has the power to change things and cannot afford to stand arms crossed. We cannot look the other way.
Thus, in this new adventure that the festival proposes for next summer, the active and positive call to defend the planet is maintained, in line with last year’s consolidated Stand up for Earth. This time however it goes a step further. “We know that another world is possible; but only if we save and take care of the one we have”, says the organization.
“At Rototom Sunsplash we have always said that change begins with people, that each individual is responsible for their actions and plays an important role in the effort to make social, political, economic and environmental transformation a reality. We must assume our responsibility not to be complicit in the destruction of the Earth. We must act because we can change the world”, said the same sources.
Under the umbrella of the We can change the world, the challenges for this 27th anniversary are to continue to be active in this collective struggle called Earth. “Last year we raised our voice for the planet. And now that we have taken a stand and that social awareness is an unquestionable fact, we want to act to change the world. We know that there is a global crisis, but what are we going to do about it? We must act. We need a radical change and if we commit ourselves, we can get results and show that this fight makes sense” the festival representatives add .
From August 16 to 22, the Rototom Sunsplash city, built in the Benicàssim concerts venue will be a space dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the efforts of people struggling to turn the course of Earth and humanity. It will also become a forum that will give voice to planetary heroes and heroines, which will work to identify solutions and alternatives to develop a more just and sustainable world. A world in which reggae music, recognised as intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO, is a vehicle of social, political and cultural reflection and that for 27 years has spread its values of peace, love, tolerance and respect among the festival’s community.
15 years ago, in the tenth edition of the Rototom Sunsplash (Osoppo, Italy), the Jamaican poet and musician Linton Kwesie Johnson sent this message to new generations around the world: “Your opinion and your action are important. You can change the world. You can change the world. ”
“A lot has changed since then. We have changed countries, overcoming important challenges; we have evolved and grown as a festival; our family has grown bigger; but 15 years on, the message is still alive. As is our commitment to these words and the ideal that Another world is possible. From August 16 to 22, we will demonstrate this in Benicàssim”, they conclude.
