Sizzla Kalonji to headline the Jamaica Ghana (JaGha) Reggae Festival
The Jamaica Ghana (JaGha) Reggae Festival is one of the main event at ‘The Year of Return Ghana 2019‘. The Year of Return, is an initiative by the Ghana Tourism Authority to position Ghana as a key travel destination for African Americans and the African Diaspora. It is also a major landmark spiritual and birth-right journey inviting the Global African family, home and abroad, to mark 400 years of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in Jamestown, Virginia.
Rastas the world over have been and continue to be vocal about Repatriations and about the return to Mother land. If is quite befitting that Reggae is one of the major highlights of They Year of Return, with a music festival called JaGha Reggae Festival. Sizzla Kalonji, the headline act, has always included Repatriations, return to the Mother Land in his lyrics and has proven to not just sing about it, but put it into practice. He had previously performed in Ghana in 2010 and 2012 and was subsequently given a piece of land by a well respected Chief. Sizzla was also gifted a piece of land in Zimbabwe and Gambia. “I really love Africa. Africa for the Africans—those at home and those abroad,” proclaimed Sizzla in 2010.
A video of Sizzla Kalonji went viral where two ladies went crazy when they saw Sizzla riding on a motorcycle in Jamaica, the Lady driver screams to Sizzla that her friend is from Ghana then Sizzla proceed to tell them that he will be performing in Ghana on the 13th, thus confirming his attendance.
The JaGha Fest which is hosted by Edge of the World Productions – a UK-based Ghana/Jamaica owned event company – is anticipated to be an annual festival which will be held in Ghana and endorsed by the Jamaican Department of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and sport and Ghana Travel Authority. The event which was meant to be hosted in March 2019 was postponed to the 13th of April 2019.
Also billed for the Fest is the Jamaican Reggae crooner Duane Stephenson. The Ghanaian line up includes heavyweights like Samini Ras Kuuku, Epixode, Rudebwoy Ranking, Sean Taylor, XLNC, Shegah, Kahpun, Black Mallam and many more.
The Festival will be held at Independence Square in Accra, Ghana and is free to the public. JaGhafest promises to be a yearly event to boost tourism and repatriation, thus strengthening the strong bond between Jamaica and Ghana, the leading faces of the project.
