Skank and The Roots to Perform at One Love Festival in the UK
Skank and the Roots Reggae Band has been invited by the One Love Festival UK to perform at the One Love By The Sea Festival, on the 27th of July, which is one of many Pre-Fests before the main one. They are also scheduled to perform at the main festival “One Love Festival – Hop and Hemp” which will be held on the 30th of August – 1st September 2019. They will be sharing the stage with bands likes of Unstoppable Fyah from St Ann, Jamaica, the Senegalese born Sun Sooley who is now based Italy and The Scorchers Band from the UK.
Skank and the Roots is a Roots Reggae Ska band from Uitenhage, Eastern Cape South Africa. The band was formed in the early 90s and has been performing together for close to 28 years. It is made up of members from a 90s band African Roots which was formed by Eric “Skank” Mooi; when it disbanded the remaining members renamed it to Skank and the Roots which is comprised of: Nkenke Eric “Skank” Mooi on Lead Vocals; Mkhangeli “MK” Matiwane on Bass; Fezile Gumede on Backing Vocals and Percussion; Frank Barends on 1st Keys; Sergio Dominic Naude on Drums; Deon Manell on Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals and Emjel Hannes Jonathan on 2nd Keys, Backing Vocals. Sadly in 2017 the band lost one of its original member and Drummer Ras Dumile “Rebel” Dabula.
In 1993, they had a chance to perform in front of the Late Former 1st South African President under the new post Apartheid Government Nelson Mandela. They have graced Festivals like Africa Unite Reggae Sunsplash held in Cape Town, One Blood Fest in Nelson Mandela Bay, 2017 National Arts Fringe Festival in Grahamstown. In May 2016 they jetted off to the Internationally Acclaimed Reggae Festival in Germany, Ruhr Festival, where they got to share the stage with Reggae Powerhouses like Anthony B, Cocoa Tea, Black Uhuru and Alpha Blondy. Their 15 track Debut Album “Jah is Love” was released in March 2017.
The songs Cool Day and Natty Dread from the Album are featured in a mixtape titled “Cool Summa Day” by DJ LOVE IRIE Sound from Germany, which was released on the 22nd of February 2019. The mixtape also features the new Reggae sensation Koffee, BLVK H3RO, Kabaka Pyramid and Micah Shemaiah to mention a few.

One Love Festival was formed in 2008 and named after the famous Bob Marley song “One Love” their sole aim and mission is to spread Love and Peace across the Globe.
