Women in Music Project In association with Soweto Theatre is hosting its 1st fund raising concert at The Soweto Theatre on the 12th of December 2014.
The aim of the project is to teach women and young girls how to play music instruments. The music industry is male dominated with hardly any representation of women amongst the instrumentalists. Following a successful career in music which spans over 8 years, Portia Sibiya, one of the leading female bass players in the country, has taken the initiative to impart some of her experience and talent with women of South Africa. A move that’s often spoken off however not quite implemented. Portia Sibiya a doer by nature took the hard task of mobilizing the country’s finest female band for a one of a kind performance
With their combined presence and the bigger picture of setting up a music school, this is sure to be an amazing pre-launch of the School whilst raising funds towards the realization of this vision with the execution of holding work shops in disadvantaged communities, correctional facilities, rehabilitation centres and childrens homes. The permanent location of the school is yet to be announced, however that will go hand in hand with the road shows and activations that Women in Music is going to be hosting around the country to raise more awareness about the project.
Women in Music, a fourteen piece All Female Band, will be backing up renowned local artists such as Simphiwe Dana, Ray Phiri, Thandiswa Mazwai, Sfiso Ncwane, Zama Jobe, MXO, Thembisile Ntaka, Tshepo Tshola Sbusiso Dhludhlu,Lira and many others. This performance will make music history, it will be the first time ever that an ALL WOMEN BAND has played with this many artists in one night/ one stage.
